Snack attack: curb the munchies without guilt

Lunch was hours ago and it’s going to be another late dinner. What to do about that growling stomach?

Have a snack, of course.

But noshers beware, there’s hydrolyzed vegetable protein in those savory treats, and something called carboxymethylcellulose in that sweet.

What are those? Exactly.



Middle of the day cake craving? Nighttime salt addiction? Don't cave. Have this instead.

But noshers beware, there’s hydrolyzed vegetable protein in those savory treats, and something called carboxymethylcellulose in that sweet.

What are those? Exactly.

The Herald News asked Pamela Bermudez, a registered dietician and certified diabetes educator at the HealthFirst Family Care Center, how to slay those hunger pangs without consuming things that can’t be pronounced or digested.

“If it’s three hours until your next meal, maybe have something with protein,” Bermudez said.

A few good choices are fruit and cheese, peanut butter on half an English muffin, cheese sticks and whole grain crackers, or Bermudez’s favorite: plain Greek yogurt (it has less sugar) with fresh fruit and nuts mixed in.
